Driver’s Licenses for California’s Undocumented Immigrants May Soon Be Available

26 September 2013

Undocumented immigrants living in California may soon obtain their driver’s licenses. On September 13, 2013, California State Legislature passed a bill (AB60) which will allow undocumented immigrants to apply for California driver’s licenses. The bill is awaiting Governor Brown’s signature, and he has indicated that he will sign the bill into law, which will become effective January 1, 2015.

Theses driver’s licenses will be for driving purpose only. The licenses will likely bear a mark indicating that the licenses do not extend employment or public benefit eligibility. The applicants must pass written and driving tests and follow all DMV regulations. Additionally, the licenses will allow undocumented aliens to purchase car insurance.
